Health is a top priority for each one of us. Most people do make an effort to achieve a good health. Good health is closely related to longevity and leading a happy lifestyle.

During the COVID pandemic, we realised and experienced the importance of having a good health. During the COVID pandemic, we witnessed that people with good health were relatively far better off.

Some people inherit good health and some are born with health issues. However, most people can achieve significant improvement in their health by incorporating simple changes in their diet and lifestyle.

What Is Health ?

The most famous, comprehensive and modern definition of health was created during the Preamble to the Constitution of the World Health Organization ( WHO ).

As per the World Health Organization, the term “health” is defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of any disease or infirmity.

The WHO’s definition of health is quite comprehensive. Let us now dive a bit deeper and understand the meaning of three principal components of health, which include physical health, mental health, and social health.

All the three dimensions of health, which include physical, mental, and social health, are closely related and interdependent on each other. In order to enjoy the state of optimal health and wellbeing, a person must improve on all the three principal constituents of overall health.  

What Is Physical Health ?

The term “physical health” refers to the physical abilities of the human body. In medical science, physical health is a broad term.

There are many dimensions to physical health. For example, physical health generally means the absence of any disease, fitness level, stamina, endurance, and the physical strength of our body.

Leading a healthy lifestyle is the simplest and most effective method to achieve physical health. Healthy food eating habits is equally important to provide the necessary nutrition to our body.

In simple words, a healthy lifestyle is all about eating fresh and healthy food, regular physical exercise, adequate sleep, drinking enough water, exposure to sunlight, and practicing hygiene standards, which are essential to keep the body fit and healthy.

What Is Mental Health ?

Let us now discuss another important dimension of our health and that is mental health. Mental health refers to the cognitive, behavioural, and emotional well-being of a person.

Depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders have a profound impact on the overall health of a person. Mental health is all about how people think, feel, react to a situation, and socially behave.

People with mental health issues do not realise the need to acknowledge the disorder as a medical issue that needs to be treated. Therefore, the family members of the affected person should be encouraged to seek medical help.

It is our mental health that helps us cope with stress and depression. It also helps us understand how we relate to others, build relationships and make healthy choices.

Meditation and yoga have immensely helped many people to improve their mental health. Meditation and yoga can help a person with mental health issues by activating their inner strengths.

What Is Social Health ?

Social health is another important indicator of our health in addition to physical and mental health. In sociology, the human being is said to be a social animal. Which means the social environment around us is an important aspect of our health and wellbeing.

Humans cannot stay in isolation and our social circle and social interactions are an important part of our lives. Social health also affects the social conduct of a person.
